Widely known as a special privilege permitting the embellishment of objects, embroidery is the patient process of passing needle and thread with deference a thousand times back and forth through cloth. It is the choice Chang Xugong made, a powerful force in what concerns the ingredients of folkloric tradition and all techniques pertaining to embroidery, to breathe new life into contemporary art. His work borrows heavily from rural imagery, and the tie that accompanies the western suit easily takes on a rustic, even backwards, air- brash colors, ill-assorted accessories and a composition reminiscent of a page from the almanac, the result is an extremely kitsch, very "Gaudy Art", formal language. It is as much a mockery as a study of brightness, a perfectly adequate coupling to highlight one of the most photographic images of our age – that of the rural nouveaux riche.
